4x4 club battle: Round 1 wrap
2013-03-05 13:38

TRIUMPH FOR VINTAGE 4X4S: Danie Tait and Liaan Fourie earned third place in their vintage Suzuki SJ Samurai, called Mongoose.

Bridgestone’s 2013 4x4 Club Challenge got off to a great start as the Suzuki Auto Club hosted the first round of the series.

The competition, held at Leeuwenkloof farm near Hartbeespoort Dam in Gauteng, saw 30 Suzuki 4x4s tackle nine challenges of varying difficulty. Challenges included a treasure hunt, medium grade 4x4 tests and a “blind driving test” which involved blind folded drivers navigating obstacles with the help of their respective co-drivers.

'FLIPENAWESOME' VICTORY

Flip Kotze and Herman Steyn claimed first place in their “FlipenAwesome” Suzuki Jimny 1.3. The experienced team and former Bridgestone Fundi Challenge front-runners won a R10 000 tyre voucher from Bridgestone.

Steven Grieve and Saleem Barmania demonstrated that their Grand Vitara 2.4 may be bigger, but was no less capable than the Jimny to take second place. The pair bagged a set of spotlights valued at R4000.

Danie Tait and Liaan Fourie were third in their vintage Suzuki SJ Samurai called “Mongoose”. The pair took home a hand winch.

Suzuki Jimny crew Brett Bailey and Natalie Shephard won a R2000 environmental award for being the most environmentally considerate fashion drivers of the day.

The top three finishers have now earned spots in the Bridgestone Club Challenge Final in November 2013 to compete against the top crews of all the major 4x4 clubs in South Africa.

Bridgestone’s Daniel Barbosa said: “Round 1 was exactly the kind of exciting opening event we needed to give the 2013 series momentum. This format seems like it is going to be very successful. The atmosphere during the event was festive and relaxed and everybody was having a great time."

Roadkill

How many of us have been driving the highways and byways of South Africa after dark and have suddenly had to brake or swerve to avoid a collision with an animal crossing the road? How many of us driving in the daylight have passed the carcasses of mammals, birds and reptiles that have been killed by other passing motor vehicles? Over a 120 day period in the in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area, there were 1 121 fatalities of 162 different species. This is one section of road in one small geographic region of South Africa. There are 754 600 km of roads in South Africa. These roads bisect habitats, territories and home ranges of animals and separate feeding areas from den sites. Wendy Collinson of the EWT has been conducting the very first comprehensive roadkill survey in South Africa over the last 2 years.
